Hardwood Floor Calculator

A hardwood floor calculator finds how much hardwood you need by calculating room square footage, adding waste, and dividing by the coverage per bundle or box. Hardwood often needs a slightly higher waste allowance for cutting and grading. Enter your room dimensions and box coverage below.

How Much Hardwood Flooring Do You Need?

To calculate hardwood, multiply room length by width for the square footage, add waste, then divide by the coverage per bundle. Solid hardwood often uses a slightly higher waste allowance, around 10 to 15 percent, because boards are sorted for length and grade and some are cut out. A 250 square foot room with 12 percent waste needs about 280 square feet of hardwood, which the calculator converts to bundles.

Why Does Hardwood Need More Waste?

Hardwood, especially solid wood, needs a bit more waste because installers cull boards for defects, grade and length to get a good-looking floor, and the racking process produces offcuts. Engineered hardwood is more uniform and can waste a touch less. Diagonal layouts raise waste for any wood. Plan 10 to 15 percent and keep extra boards, since matching wood batches later is difficult.
