Grout Calculator
A grout calculator estimates how much grout you need from your tile size, grout joint width, tile thickness and total area. Smaller tiles and wider joints use more grout because there is more joint length per square foot. Enter your tile and area details below for an estimated pounds of grout.

How Do You Calculate How Much Grout You Need?
Grout usage depends on four things: tile size, joint width, tile thickness and total area. Smaller tiles have more joints per square foot, and wider or deeper joints hold more grout, so both increase the amount. The calculator uses the standard coverage formula from these inputs to estimate the pounds of grout, then converts to bags. Because coverage formulas are approximate, buy a little extra to finish the job without a second trip.
Why Does Tile Size Change Grout Usage?
Tile size changes grout usage because grout fills the joints between tiles, and smaller tiles pack more joint length into each square foot. A mosaic sheet has far more joint than large-format tile over the same area, so it uses much more grout. This is why a grout estimate needs your tile size, not just the area: two floors of equal size can need very different amounts of grout based on tile dimensions.
How Wide Should Grout Joints Be?
Joint width depends on the tile and look: 1/16 to 1/8 inch is common for rectified and wall tile, while 1/8 to 1/4 inch suits floor and rustic tile. Wider joints use more grout and need sanded grout, while very thin joints use unsanded. Joint width feeds directly into the grout estimate, so set the width you plan to use, since it noticeably changes the quantity.

Frequently asked questions
- How much grout do I need?
- Grout depends on tile size, joint width, tile thickness and area. Smaller tiles and wider joints use more. Enter these in the calculator for an estimated pounds of grout.
- Does tile size affect how much grout I need?
- Yes, a lot. Smaller tiles have more joint length per square foot, so they use much more grout than large-format tile over the same area.
