Brick Calculator

A brick calculator works out how many bricks you need by multiplying your wall area by the number of bricks per square foot (about 7 modular bricks per square foot for a single-thickness wall), then adding waste. It also estimates the mortar. Enter your wall dimensions below to get the brick count and mortar.

How Do You Calculate How Many Bricks You Need?

To calculate bricks, find the wall area (length times height), then multiply by about 7 for a single-thickness modular brick wall, since roughly 7 standard bricks with mortar joints cover one square foot. A 20 by 8 foot wall (160 square feet) needs about 1,120 bricks before waste, or about 1,230 with 10 percent. The calculator adjusts for wall thickness and estimates the mortar too.

How Many Bricks Are in a Square Foot?

About 7 modular bricks cover one square foot of single-thickness wall, including the standard 3/8 inch mortar joints. The exact figure depends on brick size: modular, queen and king bricks differ. A double-thickness (two wythe) wall doubles the count. The calculator uses 7 per square foot as the modular standard and adjusts for wall thickness so your order is accurate.

How Much Mortar for Brick?

Brick mortar runs roughly 1 bag of mortar mix per 30 to 40 bricks for standard joints, so a 1,120 brick wall needs about 28 to 37 bags. Joint thickness and your technique change the figure, so buy a little extra. The calculator estimates mortar from the brick count, and you can refine it with the mortar calculator for specific joint sizes.

Frequently asked questions

How many bricks do I need for a wall?
Multiply the wall area by about 7 bricks per square foot for a single-thickness wall and add 10 percent waste. A 160 square foot wall needs about 1,230 bricks.
How many bricks are in a square foot?
About 7 modular bricks per square foot of single-thickness wall, including mortar joints. A double-thickness wall doubles the count.
How much mortar do I need for brick?
About 1 bag of mortar per 30 to 40 bricks. A 1,120 brick wall needs roughly 28 to 37 bags, plus extra for joint variation.
