How Do You Calculate How Much Wallpaper You Need?
To calculate wallpaper, add the length of your walls and multiply by the height for the wall area, then add waste for the pattern repeat and trimming, and divide by the usable area of one roll. A US double roll has about 56 usable square feet out of roughly 60. A room with 480 square feet of wall and a standard pattern needs about 10 rolls. The calculator factors the pattern repeat into the waste.
Why Does Pattern Repeat Add Waste?
Pattern repeat adds waste because each strip of wallpaper must be aligned so the design matches across seams, and the larger the repeat, the more you trim from the top of each strip to line it up. A large repeat can waste 15 to 20 percent or more, while a random or small pattern wastes little. This is why the calculator adds a pattern allowance, which you raise for big repeats.

Wallpaper is often sold as double rolls in the US. A double roll contains roughly 56 to 60 square feet, but usable coverage is lower once you account for pattern matching and trimming, so about 56 square feet is a safe working figure, and less for big repeats.
