Fence Post Calculator

A fence post calculator finds how many posts a fence needs by dividing the fence length by the post spacing and adding one for the end post. It also estimates the concrete to set each post. Enter your fence length and spacing below to get the post count and concrete.

How Many Fence Posts Do You Need?

To find fence posts, divide the total fence length by the post spacing, then add one, because a fence with 15 sections needs 16 posts. A 96 foot fence at 8 foot spacing is 12 sections, so 13 posts. Corners and gates need extra posts. The calculator counts the line posts from your length and spacing, and you add posts for each corner and gate opening.

How Deep Should Fence Posts Be Set?

Fence posts should be set about one third of their above-ground height into the ground, and below the frost line in cold climates. A 6 foot tall fence post is often set 2 to 3 feet deep. The hole is usually 3 times the post width. Deeper, wider holes use more concrete, which the calculator factors into the bag estimate per post.
