How Many Pavers for a Patio?
To calculate patio pavers, divide the patio area by the area of one paver and add 5 percent waste. A 12 by 14 foot patio (168 square feet) with standard 6 by 9 inch pavers needs about 470 pavers with waste. The calculator also sizes the 4 to 6 inch gravel base and the 1 inch sand bed, so you order all three materials for a stable patio at once.
How Do You Build a Paver Patio Base?
A paver patio base is built in layers: excavate, lay 4 to 6 inches of compacted gravel for drainage and stability, add about 1 inch of bedding sand screeded flat, then set the pavers and sweep joint sand between them. Skipping or thinning the base is the main cause of sunken, uneven patios. The calculator estimates the gravel and sand so the base is done right.
