How Much Fill Dirt Do You Need?
To find fill dirt, multiply area by depth for cubic feet, divide by 27 for cubic yards, and multiply by about 1.05 for tons. A 40 by 15 foot area at 8 inches deep is 400 cubic feet, about 14.8 cubic yards, or roughly 15.6 tons. Because fill dirt compacts, order somewhat more than the bare figure. The calculator includes a compaction and waste allowance for this.
What Is Fill Dirt Used For?
Fill dirt is used to raise or level ground, backfill around foundations, fill holes and create a stable base under structures. Because it has little organic matter, it compacts firmly and resists settling, unlike topsoil. It is not for planting. When a project needs both, you fill with dirt to grade, then cap with topsoil for the growing layer.
